Most people arrive knowing they want more seating and not much else. Corner sofa or 3+2 set is usually the first real decision, and the right answer depends less on taste than on your room, your stairs and how long you plan to stay.
The case for a corner sofa
It uses space other layouts waste. The corner of a room is dead floor. A corner sofa turns it into the best seat in the house.
More seats per square metre. Because there's no gap between two separate frames, and no wasted arm in the middle, a corner seats more people in the same footprint than a 3+2.
It anchors the room. One large piece against two walls makes a room feel deliberate. Two separate sofas floating in a space can look unresolved.
Somewhere to stretch out. With a chaise end, one person can lie down properly.
The case for a 3+2 set
It fits through doors. Two smaller frames navigate narrow hallways, tight landings and staircases that a one-piece corner simply cannot clear. If you live in a terrace or a flat with a turn on the stairs, this matters more than anything else on this page.
You can rearrange it. Face them at each other, run them along adjacent walls, put the two-seater in a different room. A corner sofa goes in one place and stays there.
It survives moving house. A corner built for your current living room may not suit the next one. Two sofas will fit almost anywhere.
Better for conversation. Two sofas facing each other is a better shape for talking than an L, where people at either end are looking past each other.
How to decide
Choose a corner if: your room has a usable corner, access is straightforward, you're staying put, and you want maximum seating with somewhere to lie down.
Choose a 3+2 if: access is tight, you rent or expect to move, your room is long and narrow rather than squarish, or you want the freedom to change the layout later.
Choose modular if you can't decide. A modular sofa is both. It arrives in sections, goes through any doorway, builds into an L now, and rebuilds into a straight run when you move.
One thing that surprises people
